Things to Do In September

September 2001

Though the heat of summer remains, September is the beginning of autumn. We can say, that together with October, it is the best season for reading, sports, outings and art events. What would you like to do after the scorching Japanese summer? Here are several suggestions.

Moonlight Serenade
A ceremony called Tsukimi, or moon viewing, is held in mid September every ear, when the moon is said to be its most beautiful. People decorate small tables with pampas grass, rice cakes, and chestnuts for viewing the moon.

Candle Festival in Hashimoto City
Sep. 3 (Mon.)
About twenty thousand candles will be lit to offer a prayer for good health. The shrine is 20 minutes' walk from Kii-Yamada Sta. on the JR Wakayama Line.

Autumn Festival at Miwazaki Shrine in Shingu City
Sep. 15 (Sat.)
The floats and portable shrines will parade through the streets, and on the beach you can enjoy the brave dance by men representing the whaling industry. 5 minutes' walk from Miwazaki Sta. on the JR Kinokuni Line.

Annual Festival at Katsuura Hachiman Shrine in Nachikatsuura Town
Sep. 15 (Sat.)
This festival is famous for its bravery with portable shrines carried by men jumping into the sea after the parade in the evening. 5 minutes' walk from Kii-Katsuura Sta. on the JR Kinokuni Line.

Air Show in Shirahama Town
Sep. 22 (Sat.)
There will be an exhibition of various aircrafts, and demonstration flights. The airport is 10 minutes' bus ride from Shirahama Sta. on the JR Kinokuni Line.

Flea Market Festa at Wakaura in Wakayama City (1)
Sep. 23 (Sun.), 24 (Mon.)
They are having a large variety of flea markets.


Gourmet Festa at Wakaura in Wakayama City (2)
Sep. 24 (Mon.)
You can enjoy local cuisine cooked with fresh fish and shellfish, and experience catching fish by dragnet on the spot. The market square is 10 minutes' walk after getting off the bus at Furoubashi Bus Stop from JR Wakayama Sta.

Annual Autumn Festival at Nichizen Shrine in Wakayama City
Sep. 26 (Wed.)
The Shinto service will be held to pray for a rich harvest and peace for people. 3 minutes' walk from Nichizen Sta. on the Nankai Kishigawa Line from JR Wakayama Sta.
